NEW FULLERIANS BADGE PROPOSAL CENTENARY SEASON 2026 - 27

I want to take this opportunity to give you some background on why I have proposed the
new club badge initiative.

A game was played between Watford Boys Grammar School and a group of WBGS Old
Boys in December 1925. This group of old boys became known as Watford Grammar
School Old Boys RFC in 1926, this club was then renamed Old Fullerians RFC in 1927 and
from that time played in black, green and red which were the official colours of the Old Fullerians Association. From 1926 to 1965 it remained a closed club with only ex WBGS pupils allowed to join.

During this first 39 years the club didn’t have its own badge, it simply used the WBGS badge for official business. In 1965 the club was renamed Fullerians RFC and was open to all comers. After 1965 the club membership set about raising funds to build a new club house on the site we currently occupy. During this time, the club now open to all comers still didn’t have their own badge.

In 1970 the new clubhouse was opened and a close relationship developed with the Fuller
Smith and Turner Brewery and towards the end of the 1970s the club adopted the Griffin
from the brewery logo. Even though the playing kit didn’t feature the Griffin and there was
no such thing as stash in those days the Griffin remained our club badge until 1995.

In 1995 the men’s side toured the USA and the current badge was put together by myself
as the tour logo. It wasn’t meant to be a new club badge but during the following few
years the tour logo seemed to get adopted as the club badge. The tour badge took elements from the WBGS crest hence the main feature ended up being a Lion not a Griffin.
The centenary gives us the opportunity to update the badge by reintroducing the griffin
which was the clubs first independent badge and continue to use the red, green and
black of the Old Fullerians Association to create our own identity celebrating 100 years of
rugby.
