Fullerians came away from Welwyn empty handed in their first game of the new season, but there was plenty of positives to build on.
New head coach Tom Courtney selected his first match squad from a depleted list owing to injuries, availability issues and a handful of recent departures. Despite that the team was strong, youthful and hungry for success. They will only get better as the weeks go by.
Fullers started with great intent and young hooker Oscar Adams showed exactly what we’re to expect from the youth in this squad with a dazzling run and excellent offload in the tackle in the opening couple of minutes but it was a familiar feeling conceding a couple of early tries to some sloppy tackling inside the opening 10 minutes.
Jack Hobbs got Fullers back in the game as he crashed over taking 3 defenders with him from 2 meters out under the posts setting up an easy conversion for Dan Evans.
Welwyn went down to 14 men shortly after following a late hit on Sean Deller, Deller in agony had to be subbed off as a result, then a few minutes later Fullers continued the intensity and new skipper Liam Boyd got his first try of the season in typical fashion bundling over again from a couple of meters out, Evans on hand again to make it 10-14.
get yet more dominance in Welwyn’s 22, Fullers conceded a penalty and got matched back ten and Boyd was sent to cool off for ten minutes in the bin for backchat to the referee.
Half-time 10-14
Fullers continued where they left off with good territory and position and ten minutes after the break Evans extended the lead with a nice penalty kick from over 30 meters but that was the end of the points for Fullers as Welwyn stepped it up a gear and scored 3 unanswered tries to put the game to bed.
Fullers knew they were beaten but didn’t give up and were in search of the losing bonus point however a frustrating end saw Fin Horastead binned seconds before the final whistle for a clumsy late challenge which probably prevented a 6th Welwyn try.
Overall a good performance with a bit to work on, ultimately Welwyn deserved the victory and we wish them well for the rest of the season.
Full time 27-17
