What a game, Fullerians on the back of two frustrating weeks welcomed high flying Old Priorians back to Coningesby Drive.
The visitors had won their opening 4 games all with try bonus points and if the close encounters from last season were anything to go by this quite rightly was predicted to be a thriller.
OP’s quite simply dominated territory in the first 40 minutes as Fullers superbly blocked almost every opportunity only conceding a penalty on 20 minutes and a converted try on 35 minutes. Dan Evans spent 10 minutes in the bin as the defence held firm from a frustrated attacking line who expected much much more from time in Fullerians half.
Half time 0-10
A fairly honest and brutal team talk from head coach Gavin Jakeman did the trick as for a game often described as a game of two halves proved very much the case.
Fullers were fired up, as they kicked of towards the clubhouse with the sun behind them now everything clicked into place and the pressure switched to a excellent display of scrummaging and handling and the determination to show the huge crowd what they are capable of got underway.
George Harvey scored two lovely tries from the back of the scrum which was at its very best and Rich McCabe crashed over for the 3rd, Captain Ben Matchett was on kicking duty today and slotted two of the three conversions.
OP’s weren’t giving up and wanted something from the game and their fullback made a thrilling run in the dying minutes to score a 50 metre try under the posts which was converted leaving just two points between the sides, they came back again and thought they’d won a penalty on Fullers 22 only for the referee to award it to Fullers and Matchett calmly kicked to ball off the field to end the game.
