Sport is often described a game of two halves and this game was very much the case.
Fullerians travelled to H&F on a bright autumnal afternoon looking to upset the unbeaten league leaders just as they did two weeks ago when they downed the only other unbeaten team at the time Old Priorians, but the home side had other ideas after the break.
Fullers started with intensity, drive and belief and The Hammers were shell shocked when Liam Mann collected a nice pass out wide to dazzle the defence and dance his way to the tryline to score after 3 minutes, captain Ben Matchett slotted superbly from out wide .
H&F started to settle and scored an almost carbon copy try 5 minutes later but couldn’t convert. Fullers still on the offence earnt a penalty right in front of the posts, Matchett dispatched with ease.
Fullers continued with upsetting the favourites and scored again with a huge rumbling effort from George Harvey off the back of yet another dominant scrum only to be tackled a few meters out where impressive Rich McCabe crashed over in the corner much the delight of the handful of Fullerians supporters who made the trip, the conversion was agonisingly close but short.
A few minutes later veteran Sam Tinsley, loving life in the centre, earnt his well deserved hit of the day by literally tackling and driving a H&F player back off his feet at least 5 meters showing Fullers weren’t there to be played off the park.
Then Hammersmith showed us why they are top of the league with some sheer brilliance in midfield leaving the Fullers defence in awe from some great play which easily could have been manufactured in leagues well above level 6.
It was then with a few minutes of the half to go it appeared Fullers switched off and Hammersmith didn’t fancy going in down at the break that they took the game by the scruff and scored under the posts and converted.
Half time 19-15
The second half was disappointing and Hammersmith ran in 3 tries, all converted, and added another 3 point from a ridiculous penalty after Fullers were marched back 20 yards for backchat.
Curtis Woodham spent 10 mins in the bin after some handbags with the impressive H&F centre.
Fullers knew they were beaten but that said H&F’s last two tries were in the final 6 minutes where the tireless efforts of the whole side were broken, each to a man didn’t leave anything out there and rightly so disappointed to allow the score to look as big as it was.
Full time 43-15
