Bonus point win in Borehamwood!

Sean Mahon4 Dec 2022 - 09:07

Fullers do the double over Old Haberdashers with a bonus point win in Borehamwood.

The short trip to WD6 on a chilly and damp Saturday afternoon had near perfect rugby conditions and good high scoring win was on the cards as skipper Ben Matchett got the game under way with a tactical choice to play into the wind in the first half paid off.

The game was edgy to start with both sides cancelling each others attempts with great defence however it was the home side that took the lead on 7 minutes with a long range penalty and again on 12 minutes to lead 6-0.

Veteran hooker Ross McCanns game was over after he took an accidental elbow to the nose and Fullers had a forced change with Matt Bushell sliding in the the 2 shirt with Lee Bass joining Tom McDougall at prop.
Fullers then took the lead themselves after some excellent work from George Harvey smashing through the defence when a quick pass from Matchett to Dan Anderson allowed Anderson to cheekily chip though to allow Liam Mann to dive on the spinning ball to score, Matchett calmly added the extras.

Half time 6-7

The second half started with some excellent territory, aided by the wind choice earlier, and Matchett magically executed two of the best 50/22 kicks you’ll see allowing Fullers plenty of dominance as they looked to stretch the lead, that came on 50 minutes after a period of pressure from the Fullers pack was enough for the referee to yellow card an Old Habs player and award a penalty try. A couple of changes saw Toby Lambert come in on the wing and Andrew Murray join the back row and it was Lambert with an excellent impact scoring a brilliant long run off the left wing to get behind the post and make it easy for Matchett to add the conversion.

Old Habs came back and ten minutes later Fullers found themselves down to 14 when debutant Murray was adjudged to of tripped an opponent, the home side made sure they capitalised and scored two good tries against the run of play.

Sam Mullins, back in the centre this week, had a great game and added Fullers try bonus point with some nice footwork and strength to crash over much to the delight of the visiting supporters.

Old Habs did get one more score on the board but thankfully to the brilliant captain Ben Matchett kicking two superb penalties either side of their try it was enough for Fullers to grab all 5 points and leave Old Habs in the bottom two of the league.
