Fullerians 1st XV league season back at level 6 in Regional 2 Thames unfortunately ended in defeat away to London Cornish which was played at Cobham’s AGP due to the wet weather.

Cornish went ahead with a penalty kick just before George Harvey scored a classic George Harvey try flopping over from the back of yet another dominant scrummage, stand in fullback Sean Deller stunningly added the extras. Cornish came straight back and scored 3 converted tries before half time for a well-deserved lead at the break.

Another carbon copy try, unfortunately unconverted by Ed Baldwin, for the seasons top try scorer Harvey 5 minutes after the restart was followed quickly after by Shaun Smith collecting a very unselfish offload from veteran Andy Funnel allowing Smith to run in between the posts for a much easier conversion for Deller.

Cornish then kicked up another gear with two unconverted tries and a penalty kick to end the game 37-19. The Gary Wall man of the match award was presented to Liam Mann.

An eighth place finish with 8 wins, 1 draw and 12 defeats doesn’t tell the full story with recent very close losing bonus points against three of the top five including a very narrow loss (5-7) to well-deserved champions Hammersmith & Fulham and a last minute win for second placed Amersham & Chiltern in the 27-33 thriller.

Despite the league table showing 21 played of a 22 game season, the Belsize Park fixture will not be played as essentially it’s a dead rubber and no available time or availability to play the fixture following the postponement two weeks ago in unfortunate circumstances.

The team are now eagerly awaiting the draw of the Papa Johns Cup which will run through April with a final at Saracens Stonex Stadium on 6th/7th May, more details to follow in due course.
