Fullers narrowly lose out in ten try thriller at Cobham.

Sean Mahon5 Mar 2023 - 07:27

Winning run ended but we’ll deserved two losing bonus points against a top 3 side.

As starts go Fullerians couldn’t of wished for a worse one, Cobham made the most explosive of starts scoring 3 tries inside the first 12 minutes to lead 19-0 and shell-shock the visitors much to the delight of the large home crowd.

Fullers composed themselves and got back into the game with a Rich McCabe try after some good work in the forwards to score out wide making it a little difficult of Dan Evans who pulled the conversion a tad wide.
Skipper Ben Matchett was next to score with a nice move on the hosts five meter line and smart thinking caught the defence off guard to dart over, this time Evans perfectly slotted the extras.
Cobham added two penalty kicks to take a 25-12 lead at half time.

Another penalty kick shortly after the restart then followed by Liam Boyd heading to the bin to cool down for ten minutes allowed the hosts to continue the pressure they had before the break, another unconverted try pushed the lead on a bit further before Boyd returned to action.
A few position changes in the backs saw warhorse Sam Tinsley cut the perfect line and smash through several of the Cobham defenders to score under the posts, Evans easily added the extras.
Just as Fullers thought they were right back in it Cobham scored another unconverted try to lead 38-19 with twelve minutes left on the clock.
Another yellow card for Fullers, this time Nathan Mann binned for a high tackle, Fullers we’re holding themselves well as Cobham also tired but were not giving up and McCabe popped up with his second of the afternoon and with less than a minute remaining, Evans rightly so rushed the conversion and missed which allowed the game to restart with seconds to play as they knew one more score could add two bonus points and that’s just what happpened, a feisty period of play deep into the 80 and great ball retention resulted in a penalty try awarded to Fullers who deserved the losing and 4 try bonus points.

Full time 38-31

Gary Wall man of the match was Sam Mullins.

Next week Fullerians travel to Belsize Park in the penultimate game of the season.
