Braces from Matchett and Boyd puts Hackney to the sword

London NW 2

At last some rugby after a very wet February. Fullers pitches were still very wet so they had to hire an all-weather pitch to get this game played. The game kicked off at midday and Fullers started with a bang when the ball was shipped down the left wing to Curtis Woodham who ran half the length of the pitch to score. That was it for the winger as shortly after he went off injured.

Fullers continued to dominate all aspects of the game and Hackney were retreating rapidly in the scrum. No penalty was to come but it didn’t matter as the ball was sent out wide and centre Myles Toon was on hand to score.

They extended their lead as Fullers turned the screw as a simple pick and drive game saw flanker Rich McCabe crash over from short range. The home side could have extended their lead as they kicked for the corner and went for the line out. However, a mishap with the quick throw in saw the ball intercepted by Hackney who ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts.

Fullers got back to basics and it wasn’t long before law and order returned to Fullers and second row Liam Boyd crossed the white wash on the 37 minute to get the bonus point.

Just before the break scrum half Ben Matchett at the base of the dominant scrum was first on hand to touch down as the Fullers forwards marched their counterparts up field.

In the second half and the wind behind them Fullers continued to win the collisions and after some good slick handling and recycling replacement wing Andy Funnell went over to extend Fullers lead.

Ben Matchett went over for his second as Fullers continued their forward power play helped with a Hackney player in the sinbin.

Full back Andrew Alexander who has gone from strength to strength since his return this season showed his pace and power to run half the pitch evading the covering defence to score in the corner. Captain Dan Evans this time on target with his conversion.

To round a satisfying day for Fullerians was Liam Boyd getting in on the act again crashing over from no range for his second.

“We played well at times on Saturday but could have scored more if we kept to our structure as at times we lost shape missing out on scoring opportunities. We have five games left of the season and we want to gain as much as we gain to build for the future. We are hosting Chiswick on the 14th where we narrowly lost at their place earlier in the season.” Commented Fullerians Head coach Gavin Jakeman.
