London 1 North
Fullers started very well and it wasn’t long before they put Sudbury on the back foot. Good strong running by Fullers allowed space outside and centre James Maher used his strength to crash over. The conversion went wide.
Sudbury then got back into the match with a well worked try out wide. The conversion also went wide.
Fullers then upped the tempo to pin their hosts in their half. Intelligent kicking by Fullers and excellent kick chase put Sudbury under pressure. Fullers wing Liam Mann tackled the player over the try line. Fullers had a scrum which they walked over well controlled by George Harvey at the base who eventually crashed over for Fullers second try of the match. Dan Evans kicked the conversion to extend their lead.
Fullers then went over again as the ball was shipped wide from the lineout. A lovely move in the backs saw wing Curtis Woodham beat one defender for pace and then used his footwork to beat the other and score in the corner.
Sudbury also scored again with a rare missed tackle by Fullers. Just before the break they added a penalty for a high tackle by Fullers. 13-17 and Fullers had the wind and slope in the second half.
In the second half Fullers had opportunities to score but knocked the ball on from a driving maul or that last pass just didn’t quite convert. Sudbury also had chances to score but great shape and covering defence by Fullers shut the home team out.
The referee sinbinned two players in the second half (one from each team) as the home side got frustrated by Fullers dogged defence. In the closing stages Fullers were awarded a penalty as Sudbury were caught offside. Evans duly converted.
Fullers finished the game with 14 men after another sinbin but were still able to stop Sudbury scoring and thoroughly deserved the win.
“Our defence was great today and we took our chances well in the first half. We had to make changes due to injury in the game and the guys still kept their composure and deserved the win.” commented Fullerians head coach Rich Hoskins.
