Fullerians U15s vs Tring

Fullerians U15s vs Tring

Rhys Evans15 Sep - 21:27

Annual Curtain Raiser

The now annual curtain raiser against our league rivals Tring once again gave both sides a chance to test each other’s strength and get an early taste of what rugby at this level will demand.

Yes, there was some rust, but the boys were buzzing to be back on the grass and the excitement was clear to see. Our focus for the day was simple:
1. Keep the new attacking system in place across multiple phases.
2. Get off the line and defend the gain line at all times.
3. Backs maintaining shape and depth – no honeypotting!

*First Half*

Fullerians started brightly with Charlie opening the scoring from a sweeping backs move, converted by Ellis (7–0). Tring hit back after a defensive lapse (7–7), before sustained pressure and some shaky exits let them squeeze into the corner for another (7–12).

Momentum shifted again when Tayler threw a miracle pass that looked destined for an interception until Charlie snatched it brilliantly and raced in from halfway. Luke S converted to edge Fullers ahead 14–12.

Up front, Ollie G was everywhere – carrying hard, putting players through gaps, and being a constant nuisance at the breakdown. But Tring capitalised once more on our inability to clear effectively, and with another passive tackle they scored just before the break (14–19).

*Second Half*

The introduction of a host of substitutions fired up Fullerians and disrupted Tring’s rhythm. Lineouts and mauls didn’t quite click, but the pressure finally told when Lucas bulldozed over from five yards (21–19, Conor converting).

With tails up, Ollie N found his spark – and once he broke the line, there was no stopping him (28–19, Conor again on target). A thundering run from Samuel followed, sending a Tring defender flying backwards to raucous cheers from the sideline.

Charlie wasn’t done yet – bagging another try after excellent team build-up play, Conor keeping the scoreboard ticking (35–19). A late Tring consolation made it 35–24 at full time, but the result never really looked in doubt by then.

*Players of the Match*
• Forward: Ollie G – looking and playing like an old-school enforcer, perm and all. A monster performance.
• Back: Conor – flawless off the tee and proved just how much impact the bench can have.
• Twonk of the Day: Ollie N – for charging down a kick before the kicker had finished walking backwards.
• Oppositions Player: Charlie – a constant threat.

*TREDS of the Day: Discipline*

The lads stuck diligently to the new system and showed just how much work from preseason has sunk in.

*Coaches’ Corner*

As coaches, we knew there’d be scrappy moments – and there were – but this game was never about perfection. It was about trusting the process and learning. The boys delivered in spades, showing how much progress they’ve already made.

Plenty still to work on, but a hugely encouraging start. Next up: Letchworth RFC at home, which will give us a chance to rotate the squad and hand valuable minutes to some of the newer faces.
