The Fullerians U18s Girls squad have been participating in the Herts Girls league all season which culminated in the Herts Finals Day hosted by Harpenden RFC on Sunday 13th April for all clubs involved in the league at U18s, U16s, U14s and an inclusive event for the U12s.
The U18s squad, have had some tough games this year with some very close losses but finished 4th overall in the league. Due to play in the 3rd / 4th play off final, it was discovered that the 2nd & 3rd place clubs were unable to attend to play against unbeaten league winners Old Albanians.
U18s Girls Head Coach Alban Barnes, said “We have played OA’s twice this season in the league and national Cup and both games had been very close. I wanted to give our girls an opportunity to demonstrate how good they are, so we offered to play OA’s in the Cup Final”.
Coming into the game as underdogs, Fullerians started very strong and scored two early tries that were unfortunately not converted. OA’s came back with a converted try and it was 10 – 7 at half time.
Fullerians started the second half and continued to show their dominance, scoring two more unanswered tries and pushed out to a 20-7 lead. OAs continued to fight with both teams showcasing the best of girls rugby in Hertfordshire. OA’s pulled back to 20-19.
Fullerians worked hard and scored a 5th try of the day to make it 25 – 19. OA’s never gave up and with very little time on the clock they scored a final try to make it 25-24 with the conversion in front of the posts.
With very little time on the clock, OA’s looked to convert their try, but the whole Fullerians team chased down the kick that went wide of the upright.
Fullerians held out to be crowned winners and it finished 25 to 24.
Co-Captains Jessica & Nell said after the game “We knew we had it in us and we worked so well as a team throughout the game. We were determined to finish the season on a high and get a piece of the pie by winning the cup”
The game was the last one for a number of players who will move up to the Women’s squad next season.
We want to say a big thank you for the following players for their dedication to the girl’s squads at Fullerians RFC:
