Fullerians RFC U15’s Girls set a marker in the National Girls Cup

This season has seen the RFU restructure the National Girls Cup and streamlined the event to only 64 clubs. Our U15’s girls had gone through a preliminary round to guarantee their entry to the event and found themselves in a pool group with London Welsh RFC & Hitchin RFC.

Sunday 17th October, saw our girls travel across to West London and play London Welsh RFC. Our hosts made a great effort to mark the occasion and ensure the girls felt the importance of the match.

The girls have been training hard and benefited from the support of Women’s Club Captain Nikki Thomas who joined the girls training in the week. This allowed the girls to be prepared and they started the game with early dominance in their play and this brought some early tries, that included a first try of the season for pack leader Jessica.

Fullerians continued to show their strength in the set pieces and turned over several scrums, to gain vital possession of the ball. The backs, obviously not wanting to be out done played some delightful rugby and their direct running lines and support play brought about more tries for the girls.

Second half changes brought on debutant Viktorija who made a big impact after only attending two training sessions. Viktorija went on to score two tries in her first ever rugby game and fully enjoyed the experience of playing her first ever 15 aside rugby game.

Ensuring that we adhered to the spirit and values of rugby, our girls changed positions and gave opportunities for a 2nd new player Charlotte to have her first taste of rugby. Charlotte took her chances and made some strong runs to show her potential to the rest of the squad.

Our applauds, must also go to girls from London Welsh playing their first ever 15 aside game. They continued to play with spirit and never let their heads drop or lose focus on the game. They came close to scoring and it was only down to some great defensive work by Fullerians to keep them out. It is clear that they will grow in confidence and have bright future in the game.

Fullerians came out on top and secured the win, with their dedication, hard work and focus over the past few weeks showing through in the game. The girls will continue to work hard in training as they prepare for their next fixture, but certainly showed that girls at Fullerians will be a tough team to play against.

The next National Girls Cup Fixture will be at home to Hitchin RFC U15’s Girls on Sunday 21st November 2021 at 1.30pm KO.

It would be great if we can get a big crowd of supporters and we will share more details soon.
