Four team enjoy the sunshine with a Saturday Touch Tournament

A sunny Saturday ahead of the AGM, what better time to stage the Intra Club Touch Festival!

With the late withdrawal of the Men’s team we only had four team’s entered – the Touch Master team of 35 yr old +, an U13’s Boys led by Rhys Evans, a combined U14 & 15 Boys team led by Mike Smith, & the defending winner from last year - the Colts.

The day started badly for the Colts, who were defending champions, with too few players turning up & requiring support from the Touch section & Ed Orchard (who had only come down to watch his son!) to field a team! That really was all that went wrong for the Colts who won all three of their matches in the qualification stage.

With the other teams winning one, losing one & drawing one it came down the tries scored to see who made the final & who went into the play off for the wooden spoon.

The wooden spoon final between the U13 Boys & the combined U13 & U14 Boys was a tight affair with both sets of boys showing great skill & resilience. It was so tight that late into the second half tournament organiser, Neli Christophou was seen reaching for the rules to see what happens in the event of a draw! Eventually the U13’s sneaked it by just one try.

Having been well beaten in the qualifiers by the Colts Baa Baas the Touch team strengthened it’s team for the final adding Mike Smith, Peter Simpson & Jon Bunyard to their team. Right from the start it was obvious that both teams wanted this. With three National level Touch players on the field (one playing in the Colts Baa Baas) & Steve Simmonds (SVP) patrolling the wing for the Colts, the quality of play was exceptional with both teams trading tries almost at will! After 20 mins of play the final score was Colt Baa Baas 9 Touch 8! A well deserved win & with Club Chairman Malcolm Harrison presenting the trophy the day ended with a few well deserved beers for those old enough!

There is no rest for the Touch team who host Hemel Hempstead, Enfield, Royston, FNBs in a round of the Saracens Masters Spring League. Matches kick off at 7:30pm.
