Sunday saw us take on our rivals OAs at Fullerians. Although it was a friendly it is always nice to get a win against them during the season. We played two games, both with mixed ability teams.
The first game started well, with us taking the lead early on. We sustained pressure on their try line, but a series of knock ons allowed OAs to break and level the scores.
The game was disrupted by a number of minor injuries to the OAs players, which kept disrupting the flow of the game. Fortunately none of these were serious, and everyone managed to finish the game.
Despite some great performances in the second half, from Joseph at No 8, Billie in the second row and Eamon at full back we were unable to take a significant lead and the game finished at 3-3.
The second game started much like the first, but with a bit more structure to the game. We took the lead when Fred charged over, managing to keep his hands to himself. OAs levelled the scores again, but Fin broke through to put us back in the lead again at half time.
OAs took the lead in the second half, before more sustained pressure from the forwards allowed us to push over the line and tie the match on almost the last play.
Both games were winnable for us, and give us good heart going into the new year. There is still some work to do on line speed and attacking in the tackle, and we need to work on our set pieces. If the squad allow us the time to fine tune these areas this could be yet another successful season!
