A tale of two games! - Match report by Ash Walsh

The A’s that were present this morning had a good wake up call in match 1.. they went 3 tries down first half, the boys looked well off the pace- numerous tackles were missed- second to the breakdowns- when they did get there they were committing too many players therefore leaving big easy gaps for the OA players to exploit. The second half for 10 minutes was slightly better but again some errors of judgment- missed tackles- slow line speed-poor support play.

Fullers just could not create any momentum ..but you know what- with all these things going wrong the lads didn’t give up and kept on trying!- The final score was I think 6-0- but it certainly was not a walkover.

Match 2 – different story,

Massive improvement by all- the general play was more direct and the team upped the aggression big time! The forwards started to get to the breakdowns first, Harry Samuel leading the way here and Kyran Feasey who started this match at SH proved effective at digging out- passing it quick- generally upsetting his opponents. The backs, all of them then got their game together and there were some great breaks to note especially from Ollie Skinner and Max Brown. When in defence Fullers line speed was much better and tackles were executed. Fullers won the first half 1-0 with a line out come maul finished with a rip out driving try from Tom Walsh.

Second half OAs rolled on 7 fresh subs and came at us, playing to be fair very good rugby. Fullers defended wave after wave brilliantly, Harry, Robbie and Tom looked unbreakable; Max pulled off a super running try saving tackle but the team could nothing about the well worked try they conceded late on in the half.. so the draw in the end was a fair result.

Monty,Matteo, Jamie Irwin and Josh Edwards were key players missing today and were indeed missed.. we had to re jig the forwards- Tristan Ellis and Harry Martin stepped in and played very well at second row but it was clearly evident that the front unit were not at their usual powerful full strength today. However all thing considered all the boys did as well they could today and showed great resilience to dust themselves down after match 1 to then play miles better in match 2.

Looking ahead – we get the lads switched on to tackle like demons from the off- work on no more than2- 3 players in at the breakdowns- fitter-+ everyone gets to the matches on time!! come March and end of season our U12s can and will definitely cause teams like OAs upsets.(I’m sure of it).
