A tough and bruising encounter, but one from which valuable lessons were taken.

The Fullers Bs were comprehensively beaten in this tough encounter with a team that were stronger and faster than they were. The first ten minutes of the first half cost Fullers dearly and they were three converted tries down before they really woke up and began to play.
There was a very good reason for this: the team's inability (or perhaps unwillingness) to tackle.
It wasn't all doom and gloom though. Five minutes before the half, a number of players realised they needed to be a lot braver, and started to put the effort into stopping Chess's well-drilled and skillful backs. Tackles started to be put in, and although another try was scored before half-time, the team looked much better in defence.
The half time talk concentrated on the last five minutes, and highlighted that if they were committed to the tackles, they could staunch the opposition's attacks and get some ball to play with.
The second half was much more positive, and our boys might have held them to a non-scoring half except for a slip in concentration which saw Chess's fifth try scored in the bottom left corner (some very nice running and offloading by Chess's Max Baker, who shone all morning for his team).
Players deserving of special mention:
Callum Mortham - despite struggling at times to get to the breakdowns, he never stopped encouraging his teammates to "keep going and fight back."
Simeon Francis - wandered in late (alarm clock, Sim!) but redeemed himself with a good performance at hooker, particularly in the loose. Keep it up.
Harry Martin - another great performance from a player who never stops running and committing to the breakdowns. A great example of what is needed from a forward, and a player others could learn a lot from.
Owen Rackham - played very well at SH, despite his team being on the back foot for most of the game. Never gave up and made some good runs from the base of the scrum.
Thomas Lake - encouraged and cajoled players around him in a way he hasn't before (especially in defence) made some good tackles and attacked intelligently when he had the ball. Great stuff.
Oliver Lovegrove - didn't get to see a lot of ball going forward, but showed himself to be a willing player. Just has to believe in himself in the tackle a bit more. Stepped up and took responsibility for the restarts, all of which were excellent.
