Chingford 17 FULLERIANS 1st XV 5
Gutsy performance not quite enough
London 1 North League
A game not for the faint of heart on a dreadful pitch with weather to match. Fullers defended heroically for most of this match and could have come away with a bonus losing point at the death.
Second placed Chingford immediately put their visitors on the back foot and kept them in the 22. Scrum after scrum was going to the home side but they could not quite get over the whitewash as Fullers defended with real passion. Six enforced changes from the previous week for Fullerians did not stop this young side from performing magnificently.
Chingford did eventually go over on the half hour mark after centre James Maher was mistakenly sinbinned for being offside. The numerical advantaged proved vital as Chingford squeezed over in the corner.
Fullers couldn’t quite get out of their half as the conditions and kick chase let them down at critical times.
In the second half Fullers were again pinned in their 22 and couldn’t quite get out of the mud. The scrum for Fullers didn’t fire like it had been all season and always difficult for the half backs to kick for territory when the ball isn’t going forward.
A 5 metre scrum on their own line for Fullers ended in a score for Chingford as the pass was intercepted by the home side scrum half who had an easy job of running into to score. Moments later Chingford scored a third try as they went wide and one miss tackle was all it took for them to get behind an otherwise tenacious Fullers defence. The extra points were converted for a 17-0 score.
This young Fullers side didn’t give up the job and immediately responded with some good lines of running by full back Dan Evans and centre Liam Mann. Fly half Luke Jacobs kicked over the top and the ball was hacked on for Mann to win the race to score. Evans missed the conversion.
Only minutes remaining Fullers went straight back and went through the phases as the big Chingford forwards began to tire. Gaps appeared and Fullers believed quite rightly they could get something out of this match.
In the dying seconds Jacobs kicked wide for wing Sam Tinsley to run onto but he was only a whisker away to score and a deserved bonus losing point.
“We started slowly as with the enforced changes it took us a while to settle into the game. When we had self-belief we realised we could actually win the game but a loss of concentration for 5 minutes was all the difference as we gifted Chingford 12 points. The six changes played well and we defended heroically making for difficult selection decisions when we play Ruislip in 2 weeks’ time.” commented Fullerians Head Coach Rich Hoskins.
