North Walsham 15 FULLERIANS 1st XV 15
Fantastic second half almost earned all the spoils to Fullers
London 1 North
A superb second half display earned Fullers two valuable points but they were a whisker away from winning this contest. North Walsham started the brighter and were awarded for their efforts with a converted try after a catch and drive from the lineout saw the home side go over.
North Walsham extended their lead with another drive wide out to catch Fullers napping and they scored in the corner. The conversion went wide.
Fullers did start to come into the game and their set piece started to dominate their opponents. Up the slope they were awarded a scrum they were walking over the line but the scrum wheeled. No8 Calum Barrett picked the ball up and powered his way over the line. Full back Tom Fawssett went just wide with the conversion.
Down the slope in the second half and Fullers had their tails up. Fullers pinned their opponents in their own 22 and were awarded with a try when Barrett once again picked up from the base of the scrum and linked with his scrum half Josh Hancock who scored. Fawssett converted the extra points brilliantly from wide out.
Fullers continued to keep North Walsham in their own half with good phase play and some intelligent kicking by fly half Myles Toon. A North Walsham player was sinbinned and Fullers opted for the scrum. They were walking the home side back again but no penalty from the referee as North Walsham wheeled around and the chance went missing.
In fact for the first time in the second half North Walsham got out of their own half. They used it wisely and pushed for the line but Fullers defence held firm. The home side earned a penalty in front of the posts as Fullers were offside and duly kicked the points for a 15-12 lead.
This young Fullers team with three debutants went straight back and pushed for their own score. A catch and drive almost earned the points and the forwards pushed for the line but North Walsham held firm. Fullers were awarded a penalty wide out and as the ref played advantage a fantastic cross field kick by Myles Toon found Tom Fawssett on the wing only for the ball to be knocked out of his hands as he was going over to score.
In the closing stages Fullers earned another deserved penalty in front of the posts which Myles Toon converted for the 15-15 score.
“We started slowly but our confidence grew as the game went on and were a whisker away from winning in the end. Not many teams come to North Walsham and come away with points which was satisfying. Other referees would have given us more penalties at scrum time as we were so dominant but we played very well in the second half and all 18 contributed to the game.” commented Fullerians Head Coach Rich Hoskins.
