Strong opposition but lots of gains

It was a hot Sunday afternoon on 29th March when we welcomed Kilburn Cosmos to Fullerians.

Unfortunately Kilburn were only able to field a starting team of 12 so we kindly agreed to match them, which meant that some of our squad of 23 had to be patient to get onto the pitch.

Kilburn are an established NC2 team and their experience showed in the first quarter with Fullers having to defend their own try line for a extended period of time. Although the tackles went flying in Kilburn were able to breach the defensive line twice and went ahead 12 0 at the break.

Fullerians continued to have to defend more in the next quarter but started to put more pressure on Kilburn's attacking line and forcing them into mistakes. Kirsty led the line from the backs well and managed to force a number of turn overs in midfield.

The second half started a lot more promising for Fullerians and after a powerful run from Jurgita, Caitlin scored her first ever try on her debut. Catching what looked like a lost ball, Caitlin speed down the wing and went over in the corner.

Our second try came from a sneaky line out move where Laurel had pin point arrows to Nikki at the front where she found the space on the inside and powered 5 metres down the touchline, unfortunately they put 2 players on her and she was bundled into touch. From the following line out Kilburn fluffed their lines and tried to clear the ball by kicking directly into Nikki's face, she was able to catch the ball and fall over the try line. T nicely converted to add the extra points.

Fullers allowed all their debutants fair game time with Divia putting in a great tackle on Kilburns charging winger and Becky coming desperately close to scoring when she powered and battled for the try line.

Kilburns experience showed in the 2nd half and the overall score was 31 - 12.

Headcoach Matt said that he was really proud with the effort that all players, new and old put in. It was a tough game and a steep learning curve for the ladies but it has shown me that we are more than ready for the season ahead.
