Fullers Women Win 93-75 in high scoring game..

The Fullerian Furies were back on the pitch this past weekend, this time against the Warlingham Wildcats. Despite the disappointment of a supporting team failing to turn up, both teams arranged to play three 20 minute 8 vs 8 “halves”. Fullerians rotated players throughout the match to allow the four opposing players game time instead of settling for a training session.

Playing for the opposition in each period were:

1st third: Candice, Nicola, Rach, Katy
2nd third: Nikki, Amy, Saffron, Harri
3rd third: Jacy, Ann Marie, Marghe, Wendy

Players were able to play in new positions for parts of the game, such as Marghe who was able to experience scrum half. Ample opportunities were also given to attempt a try for each team. Experienced back Amy used crafty footwork to weave in and out of the opposition at speed for multiple tries, while Saffron scored her first ever try for the team. Rach provided incredible guidance for those teammates coming to grips with new positions, and Kate had some great attacks whilst ensuring that the laws of the game were followed. Both players scored tries for both sides.

Amongst the forwards, Candice showed ever increasing confidence in bringing the ball forward and making tackles. Number 8 Harri once again provided a good link between the backs and forwards whilst adding to the scoreboard. Captain Nikki repeatedly exhibited her strong scrumming skills, and Katy and Jacy played whole-heartedly, though they were somewhat happy to hear the final whistle blow. Twenty minute periods were a great challenge to everyone’s overall fitness.

Post-match, the ladies were greeted with a pitcher of cider, Prosecco and an impromptu communal spa (bath) experience filled partially with water but mostly of the fruits of the game (mud). Harri enthusiastically responded, “Bath, bath, bath, bath!” and hopes that the renovated clubhouse includes similar amenities.

Player of the Match was given to Wendy, one of the few who bravely took on the task of tackling the train that is Harri and seemingly endless supply of energy on field. Ann Marie was recognized not only for stepping up on the pitch with strong scrummaging in her inaugural rugby match, but also for driving fellow teammate Nicola back home after breaking her collarbone after receiving a hard tackle. We wish her a speedy and restful recovery, and hope to see her back on the pitch again as soon as she’s been cleared. Marghe disputed being chosen Dick of the Day.

The Lady Warls played with such spirit and determination that it made it easier for the Furies to ruck over and tackle their own teammates. It was a match that showed the true nature of women’s development rugby, and we are excited to have been invited back to support them in a county competition this coming Saturday. We once again extend our thanks to the Wildcats for being such excellent hosts.

Final score was 93-75 Fullers.

The Furies play again on 18 April away against Biggleswade at 2 PM.
