Seven try game gets Fullers back on track

A great display by Fullers scoring seven tries and a cracker by debutant Ed Baldwin gave a real boost to Fullers season. Once again the home side’s dominant scrum took its toll on Chelmsford and Fullers were rewarded with a penalty try as they were pushing their opponents back over the try line. Full back Dan Evans converted.

He extended the lead further with a penalty after Chelmsford were off side on their own 22. 10-0 up and barely five minutes gone. They could have extended their lead further but the penalty kick narrowly went wide.

Fullers then scored again after a quick tap penalty by scrum half Ed Baldwin found second row Liam Boyd who crashed over for his first of the season.

Then it was Chelmsford’s turn to get on the score sheet as Fullers were down to 14 after second row Craig South was sent to the sin bin. The catch and drive saw the visitors go over for a deserved converted score. They also added two more penalties before the break as Fullers were down to 13 with Ed Baldwin also sent to the bin for a deliberate knock on. 17-13 at the break.

In the second half and Fullers still with 13 on the field, Chelmsford used their numerical advantage to great effect to score out wide and take the lead 17-20. Fullers back to 14 scored almost immediately with another powerful scrum on the Chelmsford 5 metre line gaining a penalty try to take the lead 24-20.

Chelmsford added another penalty but that was it for the visitors as Fullers were now back to 15 and began to dominate the match. Second row Craig South used his power to break through the defence and score unopposed under the posts for Fullers.

Almost on the halfway line the Chelmsford scrum going backwards found it difficult to control the ball. The ball shot out and scrum half Ed Baldwin scooped up the ball and used his pace to win the race to the line and score much to the delight of the crowd. Evans once again added the conversion.

Two more tries by centre Tala Peleto crashing over from short range and flanker Leandre Le Roux rounded off a great day at the office for Fullers.

“We played very well at times and deserved to win the match. We let people off the hook at times and need to turn the screw more during the game but it was great to get the win.” commented Fullerians head coach Rich Hoskins.
