Old Hamptonians 11 Fullerians 3 Print E-mail
The start of the year Fullerians were hoping for a great start but after a long unscheduled layoff due to the weather, they started with a whimper.

Arriving in good time and warm up, Fullerians started very slowly. Playing into the slope and wind, Fullers young side could not string any phases together. Old Hamptonians took the initiative by scoring from a simple catch and drive from the lineout. 5-0.

On the occasion Fullers did get the ball through the hands they looked like they might score. Unfortunately the last pass went missing or the ball was lost in contact.

The home side did defend well but on occasion were caught off side. Fly half Nick Heley duly converted for a 5-3 scoreline. Fullers continued to push for extra points put kickable penalties were overlooked for the lineout which unfortunately did not work either being not straight or subsequent moves not being converted.

In the second half with the slope, Fullers continued to push for the line and looked like scoring themselves. Again the wrong option was either taken or ball retention let the visitors down at critical times. In fact wing Ollie Fountain scored in the corner being found with a lovely pass by scrum half Tom Sherrriff. The pass unfortunately had been judged forward.

Old Hamptonians scrapped and fought for everything on the floor with much more tenacity and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty in front of the posts. 8-3. Further pressure by the home side and weak tackling by the Fullers defence almost produced a try only to be denied illegally on the line. The subsequent penalty was converted for an 11-3 score line.

In the last 10 minutes Fullers eventually started to find some fire in the belly. Camped in the Old Hamptonians 22 the visitors began to press but again and again taking the wrong option at critical times or getting turned over.

"We did not front up today and were quite simply poor. Having talked the talk all week we did not walk the talk on the day. Our ball retention let us down and our first up tackles were the worst they have been all season. Old Hamptonians wanted it more and deserved their win. We need more commitment to training and above all on match days." commented skipper Jamie Molloy.
